Big Bird

Still can't get into Bogey Woods because the county has not mowed the trails.  The grass and weeds are almost 3 feet high and full of chiggers and ticks.  Found a large, mature male Great Blue Heron back on the back lake at Suson Park.  He hangs out there all the time, so he is used to people and he let me get pretty close before he finally flew off.

Suson Park

Most of the fields down by the river are still under water and the ones that are not are full of ticks and mosquitoes.  Visited an old favorite today, Suson Park.  Been going there since it opened.  I found this history on line at the St. Louis County Parks and Recreation site.

SUSON PARK  -  PARK HISTORY

The original Suson tract was purchased by the County from Sidney Salomon, Jr., for $135,000 in 1962.  Salomon was a well-known figure in St. Louis at the time as owner of the old Sportsmen’s Park.  His fame increased in 1966, when he acquired the Arena and became the first owner of the St. Louis Blues hockey team.  The name of  this park originated with Salomon as a combination of his children’s names, Susan and Sonny.  Several of the present buildings and lakes were in existence when the land was purchased.
The land acquired from Sidney Salomon has no restrictions.  The park was dedicated and opened to the public in May 1964.

Valley View Glades

Revisited the Valley View Glades area outside Hillsboro to see if anything new was out.  Should have gone much earlier in the day.  When we got there at 8:30am, it was already 86 degrees.  About half way through I was not sure if Bogey was going to make it.  He laid down in the shade and looked like he was done for the day.  I got him down the hill to the creek and had him wade around until he cooled off.  Way too hot for man and beast.

The flowers were beautiful though.
